The End

1. What piece of work and learning are you most proud? Explain.

I think the piece of work I'm the most proud of would be the first Tic-Tac-Toe we ever did. Tic-Tac-Toe is a series of nine projects put in a 3-by-3 square. You have to choose three projects that are in a line, like the game Tic-Tac-Toe. We had recently finished two units, one 0n the book "Call It Courage" by Armstrong Sperry and the other on the early hominids and the human evolution. The projects were a mixture of both of these units. So to give you a summary of Call It Courage, it's basically about a boy, named Mafatu, with thalassophobia who travels to an island to prove that he's brave. The three projects my group, Val and Li-Yen, chose were a miniature composition of Mafatu's island, a courage essay and a neanderthal comic. I am proud of this because this was at the beginning of the year and we did a really good job on it. We had divided the work evenly and were done early. It also showed all of us how much we knew about each unit, as this project was an end-of-unit assessment.

2. What were your greatest challenges? Explain.

My greatest challenge when it came to work habits was just remembering my things. Some times at the beginning of the year I would bring thing for even days on odd days and vice versa. I would also forget my homework and pencil case here and there. Locker combinations were also a problem--I had three... But along the course of the year it got better. Now I rarely get "lates"and am always in class on time. Homework is give-or-take there. Academically it would just be to bring my homework on time, if you would count that as academic.

3. Reflecting on your growth this year, what did you learn about yourself as a learner?

I've learnt that I always try to go "above and beyond", even though it doesn't always work. I've learnt that I'm confident in my abilities and try to do everything I can to make any piece of work I do, great. I know that I will always attempt every challenge, and I'm usually proud of myself no matter what the outcome. I've also learnt that I sometimes leave things to the last minute, and that it can effect my quality of work. Most importantly I've learnt that in a collaborative project, I will ALWAYS do my part.

4. To evaluate your work habits, choose 1 of the following from each category ( and provide explanations):

a) Behavior

Could be improved
Satisfactory

Perfect - the model student

Explanation:
I never cause trouble in class. I rarely get called on by the teacher while talking, but it has happened. I'm responsible when it comes to choosing my seat in class and my partners for projects, but they are mostly girls and my friends. I don't distract other students or act irresponsibly.

b) Participation

None
Satisfactory

Actively participate in class

Explanation:

I usually know the answer when it comes to questions the teacher asks. I listen to other students when they speak or ask questions. I'm not afraid to tell the teacher if somethings bothering me or just ask a question in front of the class.

c) Organization

Needs serious help
Satisfactory
I'm super organized

Explanation:
Well honestly I would like to say I'm slightly above "satisfactory" when it comes to organization, but I'm definitely not "super organized". You see, at the beginning of the year, as I've said before, I wasn't the most responsible person in the school. Now I almost always have my HW and rarely forget my things. I've gotten a lot better but I'm still not perfect.

d) Effort

Needs serious help
Satisfactory

I always go above and beyond what is required.

Explanation:
Firstly, I don't ALWAYS go "above and beyond', I ALWAYS try, but sometimes it doesn't work. Mostly I do though. One of the clearest examples of this would be in humanities. The projects I do always(well almost always) come out great. Whether it's a written essay, an artistic project or an IT project.

5. Based upon your reflections, write two personal learning goals for Grade 7 next year.

Goal 1 - In Grade 7, I plan to

Get more organized and NEVER forget my Homework, PE things etc.

Goal 2 - In Grade 7, I plan to

Keep trying my hardest at everything I do.

6.Is there any more information about yourself that you would like the teachers to know?

I might seem disorganized and a bit all over the place at first, but I do get better after a while and after I've settled in.

7. Finally, cast your minds back to the first few months of middle school (when you arrived in Grade 6 ) what "Words of Wisdom" or "Advice" could you pass on to the Class of 2018?

Yes, a few actually:
  • With the locker combinations, don't stress if you forget it/them in the beginning, it gets better:)
  • Don't freak out if you get one C or D or even NP
  • If you continuously get grades that are below a B-, ask the teacher what you're doing wrong
  • Don't be scared of the High-Schoolers, they don't bite!
  • If you ever get lost, don't be scared to ask for directions
  • Don't stalk Power School ;)
  • Check moodle EVERY day
  • Don't leave things 'till the last minute!
Enjoy 6th Grade!!!!

To my mentor, my father, my friend

Dear Giver,

I would just like to say thank you, thank you for always being there for me. You have been like a father figure when others disappointed me. You made me understand that things needed to change. When you first showed me what release really was, I was angry and sad. Sad because my parents lied to me and angry because you showed me. I know it was wrong to blame you back then, but I did. The truth hurts, and ironically I'm one of the only people who know that. Now I've comprehended what our community really is; a place filled with emo
tionless murderers, but with no will. Yes I am aggravated that they live this way, but they do not understand what they are doing is wrong. A lot like children in a way. Though I will miss you terribly I now understand that I must leave. I must finish what all the previous Receivers and Givers tried to do, to make a change. I am bringing Gabriel with me because he is scheduled for release. I couldn't just leave him here, would you? I know it will make the journey a bit more difficult but I will manage. Right now I am savoring every memory of courage that I have because I know that they will disappear in a while, hopefully after I reach my destination; elsewhere. I am leaving because I want t
o make a change, but mostly because I need to get away. I'm ashamed to admit it but I can't stand being here anymore, I can't stand the lies, the deaths, the emotion-less state of it all. A part of me wants to take you with me and leave these people here alone and in chaos, and I know I already told you this. I just can't get the idea out of my head, though. My parents who lie to me, my friends who kill people for a living, and worst of all, the people who know what's going on and refuse to change. Please don't think any less of me. I hope to see you soon, my friend. I know that it is not very likely but one of the most important things you have taught me is to hope.

So 'till that day,

Giver... #3 :)

" Gabriel's breathing was even and deep. Jonas liked having him there, though he felt guilty about the secret. Each night he gave memories to Gabriel: memories of boat rides and picnics in the sun; memories of soft rainfall against windowpanes; memories of dancing bare-footed on a damp lawn.
"Gabe?"
The new child stirred slightly in his sleep, Jonas looked over at him.
"There could be love" Jonas whispered.

The next morning, for the first time, Jonas did not take his pill. Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away

How does it reflect freedom and choice?

To me this passage reflects freedom because of the part with the pill. Jonas gave himself the freedom to love. The purpose of the pill was to stop you from feeling puberty. To stop you from being attracted to another person. We call it hormones, they call it stirrings. The pill also stops emotion. Jonas was letting himself feel emotion, he was allowing his feelings to take over. He was giving himself the freedom to feel actual emotions. He wasn't limiting himself. The pill's main purpose was to keep everyone under control. Jonas was allowing himself to be different, he was allowing himself freedom.

Choice is a completely different matter. I would like to highlight the part in which Jonas whispers "there could be love". Jonas was choosing to have emotions. Passionate emotions like love and hate. Allowing love would be breaking a few rules that the community has established. Like the choosing of the spouse. Here they, the leaders and elders, choose your spouse. Love would allow you the choice of your own spouse. You would probably have your own children, not someone else's. He also chose to have a secret, something that is forbidden in a controlled society. Jonas wanted the real world, he wanted choice.

So to summarize it all; this paragraph reflects choice and freedom because of the emotions(pills, love) and because of the secret that Jonas transfers memories to Gabe.

The Giver... #2... :P

Why does The Giver say that making choices would be frightening for people?

This question intruiged me, that is why I wanted to further explore it.

We make choices every day, what to eat, what to wear, what to say, to name a few. Most of these don't scare us, they might exite us, but not scare us. Our choices affect us, they don't only affect us though, they can affect the poeple around us and the place or area in which we live. But we know to learn from our mistakes and not to repeat them. But imagine if you never had to make a choice, never made a mistake, how would you react if you suddenly got this new ginarmous responsibility? Would you be able to live through it if you were exposed to this new feeling? I know I would be freaking out. It's something like finding out that animals could talk, but much worse.

But is it a bad thing to have a choice? With the guidance of the Giver and Jonas, wouldn't the society be able to survive. I think they would. The Giver before this Giver and the Giver before that and so on, must have taught each other about the memories of true life, so they can probably teach an entire community. This would be more challenging though. Humanity must have changed drastically to become the Utopia it is in the story, so who says we can't change back? I think we can change back, but there will have to be some consequences, bad ones. People who couldn't get used to this way of life, might have wanted to give up living.

As a prediction I want to see what would happen if I was going through this. My life having been perfect from the start, never have to worry about what would happen. Everything being planned. Not knowing any better, I would be content with this way of life. I would be very scared if Jonas and The Giver suddenly introduced this new way of life. But I would go through it with my parents and friends and with the help of Jonas and The Giver it would go ok. But I'm not sure if I would prefer having choices or not. Adding choices makes life harder, more challenging, different. But knowing our current way of life, I say it's worth it.

The Giver

Would you want your future to be decided by others ? Why or Why not?

To answer this question, I am going to go through the positive and negative parts of having your future decided by others, just to get a perspective of the differences.

Firstly, the positives of having your future decided by others. The positive side to this is to not be worried of choosing wrong. For example, someone I am very close to. First said she wanted to be an interior decorator, so she did all the subjects you need to do for that in High School. But when she graduated she realized her passion was photographic journalism. After a while of exploring this subject, she dropped out because she knew that this was not for her. THEN she decided to be an anthropologist, a person who studies different cultures. But again her chosen subject did not work out and she moved on to medicine. Now she is finishing her medical degree. Can you imagine how look it took for her to find out that her true calling was medicine? If her future had been chosen for her she would not have to go through this entire process and she would have saved lots of money and time.

Now, to explore the negative sides of having your future decided by others. The only really negative side I can think of is if they choose wrongly. Let's say you wanted to be an artist your entire life, but when your future is decided, you get picked to be a lawyer. You do really well in Law, but you would have been an AMAZING artist. You're talent would be wasted. And what if you would die to be an author but you get picked to be a circus clown, then you would hate every moment of the rest of your life. Okay, that was a bit of an over exaggeration. Maybe you would love circus clowning, who knows? The point is you didn't get to be what you wanted and that's just sad.

After evaluating both of these I'm still not sure. Having the responsibility taken of you sounds great. If you don't like what you become and being able to blame it on someone else would be pretty fun. It would be their fault not yours. On the other hand, what if they pick wrongly. There would be nothing you, or anyone else for that matter, could do about it. Choice over. Done. In conclusion, I think I would rather like to make my own mistakes, than have someone else do it for me.

1. Why do you think Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs created monuments?

I think Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs created monuments to leave a mark on the world so that people could remember them, even after their time. For example King Tut, Tutankhamen did not build many monuments and was forgotten for a long time after his death. Then when Howard Carter discovered his tomb, in 1922, he became one of the most known pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. All this happened just because we found out about his tomb. I also think that Pharaohs build monuments to display their achievements. Like the pharaoh Hatsheput. Hatsheput built a great temple at Dayr ak-Bahri. The temple walls were decorated with scenes from Hasheput's reign; things like the amazing things that the traders had brought back to Egypt. These are the reasons why I think that the Pharaoh's of Ancient Egypt created Monuments.

2. What monuments in our society are similar? (be sure to provide explanations and graphics).

The two monuments that I picked were the Taj Mahal and the Twin Towers. I picked the Taj Mahal because it was also built as a home for a special person after their time. A man called Shah Jahan buried his wife at the current location of the Taj Mahal. She asked him to build her a Taj while she was dying, giving birth to their 14th child. He loved her very much and built the Taj Mahal in her honor. Just like the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, he also wanted to build a place to honor his loved ones. I also picked the Twin Towers, they and the pyramids both represent their countries, they both became icons.

3. How did the using google docs as the main portal for collaboration help you with this assignment?

Google Docs helped A LOT because we could both edit the document anywhere. The advantage of Google Docs is that you can both edit and change the document at the same time. It gets saved by itself and you can see what your partner had done. It would be a lot harder to do the project with a program like Microsoft Word because you have to use a thumb drive and you can't both edit it at the same time. You also have to copy/past each other's work because it's doesn't save both your work; it only saves what you do on your document. This is why Google Docs was such a great help to our project.

4. What did you learn from this assignment?

I learned so much about King Tut. Before I only knew that he was an Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh. Now I know he was so much more than that. His tomb told us a lot about Ancient Egypt and about how they lived back then. I learned that he started ruling at a very young age and died at the age of 19! I've also learned that he was dedicated to the god Amun. He married and had children. He was the twelfth Pharao of the eighteenth dynasty. His real name is tutankhATEN but he changed it to tutankhAMUN to show his devotion to the god Amun. I went from knowing nothing about King Tut to knowing this.

5. What was challenging?

The challenging part was finishing the imovie on time. Me and Cienna had some trouble finishing and we had to come in at lunchtime to finish. We were a bit disorganized and waisted some of our time but we caught up in the end. It was also a bit challenging to divide the work evenly, with the iMovie. We didn't have a lot of challenges but we overcame all the obstacles, I think we did a great job.

6. Which schoolwide learning results were evident in this assignment?

Colloborating Constructively, hands down. Collaborating was key in this project. You couldn't do it all by yourself, you needed your partner. You both relied on each other. Doing it with a partner made it easier and more fun. The note taking and movie script went a lot faster than it would if I was doing it alone and Cienna was a great help. I'm really happy that Cienna was a partner it made the project fun and easier. Logic + Gestalt = Great Project
