Giver... #3 :)

" Gabriel's breathing was even and deep. Jonas liked having him there, though he felt guilty about the secret. Each night he gave memories to Gabriel: memories of boat rides and picnics in the sun; memories of soft rainfall against windowpanes; memories of dancing bare-footed on a damp lawn.
"Gabe?"
The new child stirred slightly in his sleep, Jonas looked over at him.
"There could be love" Jonas whispered.

The next morning, for the first time, Jonas did not take his pill. Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away

How does it reflect freedom and choice?

To me this passage reflects freedom because of the part with the pill. Jonas gave himself the freedom to love. The purpose of the pill was to stop you from feeling puberty. To stop you from being attracted to another person. We call it hormones, they call it stirrings. The pill also stops emotion. Jonas was letting himself feel emotion, he was allowing his feelings to take over. He was giving himself the freedom to feel actual emotions. He wasn't limiting himself. The pill's main purpose was to keep everyone under control. Jonas was allowing himself to be different, he was allowing himself freedom.

Choice is a completely different matter. I would like to highlight the part in which Jonas whispers "there could be love". Jonas was choosing to have emotions. Passionate emotions like love and hate. Allowing love would be breaking a few rules that the community has established. Like the choosing of the spouse. Here they, the leaders and elders, choose your spouse. Love would allow you the choice of your own spouse. You would probably have your own children, not someone else's. He also chose to have a secret, something that is forbidden in a controlled society. Jonas wanted the real world, he wanted choice.

So to summarize it all; this paragraph reflects choice and freedom because of the emotions(pills, love) and because of the secret that Jonas transfers memories to Gabe.
